What is Counselling?
Each of us at some stage in our life will meet difficult or distressing events or experience painful emotions which can be severe enough to interfere with our daily living.
Counselling provides an opportunity to share and clarify your immediate problems in privacy and confidence with a person who is trained and skilled in the art of listening and enabling personal growth.
Talking to a counsellor in a confidential, safe, non- judgemental and reliable place can help you to clarify personal issues and find ways of managing your life and relationships. This process can also lead you to a deeper understanding of yourself.
What you are offered?
We offer a free, confidential, person-to-person, safe counselling service to help you find ways of addressing the difficulties in your life.
Is it for me?
You may think that your problems are insignificant in comparison to others, but your problems are important as they affect your life.
Where are we?
Our surgeries are based in:
Camden Town,
Swiss Cottage,
and King's Cross.
All surgeries are a short distance away from local Tube Stations.
Please Note: Our surgery in Swiss Cottage has disability access.
Who is the service for?
The service is for people 18 years old or over who live in Camden, particularly for those who are experiencing mental health problems, on low incomes or unemployed.
Do I have to pay?
No, the Mind in Camden counselling service is free.
How to refer?
Just complete this self-referral form
and either email it to us at admin@mindincamden.org.uk
or you can post it to:
Counselling Service

9-15 Camden Road
London, NW1 9LQ
You are welcome to contact us directly on
0207 911 0822 or please feel free to ask your GP or other health professional to refer you.
What next?
After sending us the referral form we will then invite you for an initial assessment appointment. If the assessor feels we can appropriately meet your needs you will be matched to a counsellor as soon as possible.
When can I start?
You will usually start counselling within two to four weeks of the assessment, but occasionally there may be a longer waiting period.
After I start what next?
Counselling sessions take place once a week, at a set time and venue, that is mutually convenient for you and the counsellor.
Sessions last for 1 hour. We usually offer up to 14 sessions of counselling.
If this is my first time…
At the beginning you may find it strange to have all the attention focused on yourself, but you will get used to it quickly and start seeing the benefits.
Generally a counsellor will not give you advice or tell you what to do, but will enable you to find your own solutions.
How will I know if counselling is helping me?
For some people counselling can bring about an immediate improvement whilst for others, change happens more gradually. Your counsellor can help you to monitor your progress.
Is it confidential?
Yes, you have the right to privacy. What is said between you and the counsellor is confidential.
Will my gender and cultural background be taken into account?
Yes, our counsellors come from a range of different cultures and some can offer counselling in languages other than English.
If you have any cultural, gender or language preferences, please let us know.
Telephone Enquires
We can respond to enquires from 10am -4.30pm Monday to Friday. Messages can be left on the Mind in Camden answerphone in the evenings and over weekends.
