Depression won’t be solved by pills. We need a much broader approach to treating maladies of the mind. For anyone who has taken antidepressants — around one in 11 British adults — a gathering tomorrow at the House of Commons may make them stop and think.
The All-Party Parliamentary Group for Prescribed Drug Dependence will discuss the implications of two sets of figures. The first is that there were 61 million prescriptions for antidepressants issued last year, double the figure in 2005. The second is that there were 1.1 million mental health disability claimants in 2014, two thirds of whom were classified as having a depressive or anxiety disorder, double the number in 1995.
